Our commitment
Gem Quote Ltd is committed to making GemQuote accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standard across all pages of gemquote.co.uk.
Accessibility is important to us because our users include people of all ages and abilities using a wide range of devices — particularly mobile phones — across the UK.
Compliance status
GemQuote is partially compliant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We are actively working to reach full compliance. The known issues and our plans to address them are listed below.
This statement applies to all pages at gemquote.co.uk.
What we have done
- Added skip navigation links on all pages so keyboard users can bypass repetitive navigation
- All pages have ARIA landmark roles (navigation, main, contentinfo) to help screen readers navigate
- Visible focus indicators on all interactive elements for keyboard users
- All form inputs have associated labels
- Required form fields are marked with
aria-required="true"
- All pages have a correct
lang attribute
- Colour contrast ratios meet WCAG AA minimum (4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text)
- Minimum touch target sizes of 44×44px on all interactive elements
- Reduced motion: animations are disabled for users who prefer reduced motion
- High contrast mode: interfaces adapt for Windows High Contrast mode
- All data tables use
<th> headers with scope attributes
- Navigation is fully usable with keyboard only
- Error messages are descriptive and associated with their fields
Known limitations
We are aware of the following accessibility limitations and are working to address them:
- Quote output: The editable quote preview uses
contenteditable regions which may not be fully compatible with all screen readers. We are investigating alternatives.
- PDF downloads: PDFs generated by GemQuote are not currently tagged for accessibility. We aim to address this in a future update.
- Complex tables: Some tables in the comparison section may not be fully navigable by screen readers on older assistive technology.
- WhatsApp integration: The "Copy for WhatsApp" feature relies on the clipboard API, which may not be supported in all assistive technology configurations.
Technical specifications
GemQuote relies on the following technologies for accessibility:
- HTML5 semantic elements
- CSS — including media queries for
prefers-reduced-motion and forced-colors
- JavaScript — used for interactive components. All core functionality is available without JavaScript where possible.
- WAI-ARIA attributes where native HTML semantics are insufficient
GemQuote has been tested with:
- VoiceOver on iOS (iPhone and iPad)
- TalkBack on Android
- NVDA on Windows (Chrome and Firefox)
- Keyboard-only navigation on desktop browsers
- Windows High Contrast Mode
